Commercialization of politics will cripple our journey to free/fair Elections: Electoral Commission boss

By Ssebulime Peter

The Electoral commission has called on Ugandans to support its bid on fighting against commercialization of politics across the country.

The call was made by the commission’s boss justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi  on Monday while interfacing with stakeholders in the current ongoing national program on assessment and evaluation of the previous 2015/2016 general elections in Uganda.

The exercise, which was conducted in Kampala, was purposely intended to critically analyze the strategic plans on organizational performance necessary to mitigate further mistakes in future operations of the commission as it dispenses its constitutional role.

Byabakama added that there is still a great need to educate masses on the negative impact of commercialization of politics in relation to democracy.

“We have received credible information from various workshops throughout the country that will help the commission and other stakeholders compile a report that will take us to greater heights in attaining democracy and good governance. I appeal to legislators to enact more strong and tougher laws against commercialization of politics” Byabakama said

He also revealed that the EC is to summon all Kyadondo East candidates eyeing for the area MP seat to answer a few concerns on the reported fighting amongst supporters of various candidates, especially Ssentamu Kyagulanyi’s a.k.a Bobi Wine and Nrm’s Sitenda Sebalu.

Kyadondo East fell vacant after court nullified Fdc’s Kantinti’s win over mismanagement of the electoral process by Electoral commission.
