The 32nd African Union Summit, which will focus on refugees in Africa will be attended by all member states of the African Union, plus representatives from the United Nations of Africa,   World Bank, USAID, UKAID, International Monitoring Fund (IMF) among other stake holders. This year’s summit will run from 10th to 11th February 2019. Museveni left this morning aboard the Presidential jet. He was seen off at the Airport by among others Deputy IGP Sabiti Mzee and Uganda Prisons Services Director Johnson Byabasaija.

This year’s summit will focus on refugees and internally displaced persons in Sub-Saharan Africa, which hosts more than 26 percent of the world’s 25.4 million refugees, according to the UNHCR – the UN agency for refugees. The figure has recently been rising because of ongoing crises in countries like the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

Three African countries – Uganda, Sudan and Ethiopia – are among the top 10 countries hosting refugees in the world. The AU Summit will also reveal the long-awaited design of a passport for all African countries. It is hoped that the passports will bring the continent one step closer to free movement of its people. The 55-member pan-African body will also appoint a new  chairperson  to succeed President Paul Kagame who is stepping down.
