Victoria University Kampala is bringing about a revolution in Uganda’s technological education by introducing the teaching of artificial intelligence to learners.
Spy Uganda has learnt that Ruparelia Group owned University is soon rolling out courses in artificial intelligence and robotics.
Prof Krishna Sharma, the Vice Chancellor, revealed this during his speech at the university’s fourth graduation ceremony at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort on Friday.
“The faculty is working round the clock to bring in real training possibilities in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, information security and computer forensics,” Mr Sharma said.
Once this is put into effect, the institution will come off as the first university in the country to offer the said course.
He noted that in addition to the already existing faculties, the university will also introduce a fully equipped Centre for Languages that will cover French, English, and Chinese.
“Our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is set to launch a fully-fledged language Centre which will be teaching English, French, and Chinese language,” Mr Sharma revealed.
The graduation which ran on the theme Developing Agents of Change, also saw the graduation saw Mr Andrew Mwenda and Dr Hirag J. Kotecha added to the University’s Council Committee.
Mr Mawa Ratib, a lecturer at the same university, was appreciated and recognised for his enormous contribution to the university library, having researched and published six papers in only one-and-a-half years.
Of the 52 graduates passed out, only four emerged with first classes and were awarded plaques and cash prizes of Shs500,000 each.
Social Work and Social Administration’s Shayna Allen scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
Ms Shayna also scooped the accolades for the best student from her faculty, best performing female student, and best student overall claiming a total of Shs2m and three plaques.
If their artificial intelligence programs kick off as planned, Victoria University will be the first institution of higher learning to introduce complete robotics courses in Uganda, which will he a huge boost for technology research in the country.
