Metropolitan International University (MIU) has officially been granted a charter by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), marking a significant milestone in the institution’s growth and accreditation journey.

In a letter dated January 27, 2026, addressed to the Vice Chancellor of MIU, the NCHE confirmed that following the university’s application for the award of a charter, H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda approved and granted the charter to the Kisoro-based institution.

The communication, signed by Professor Mary J.N. Okwakol, Executive Director of NCHE, conveyed congratulations to the university leadership upon achieving the coveted status. A copy of the duly signed charter was attached to the letter.

According to the letter, the charter will be presented to the Uganda Gazette for publication, after which the university will receive a copy of the legal notice confirming the award.

A charter is the highest form of accreditation granted to a university in Uganda and signifies that an institution has met the required academic, administrative and infrastructural standards set by the higher education regulator. Chartered universities enjoy greater autonomy in governance, academic programming and the awarding of degrees.

The development positions Metropolitan International University among fully recognized universities in Uganda, strengthening its mandate to offer accredited academic programs and contribute to higher education advancement in the country.

The charter award is expected to boost the institution’s profile and attract increased enrollment and academic partnerships both locally and internationally.
