A section of Members of Parliament from the Tooro sub-region on Monday held a high-level meeting with the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, to discuss pressing development priorities and the region’s political direction.

During the engagement, the legislators placed the transformation of Tooro at the center of their agenda, calling for accelerated infrastructure development, improved service delivery, and enhanced government intervention to unlock the sub-region’s economic potential.

Sources privy to the discussions revealed that the MPs emphasized the need for strategic investment in roads, education, healthcare, and agricultural value addition, arguing that Tooro remains pivotal to western Uganda’s broader socio-economic growth.

In a significant political move, the legislators formally endorsed Anita Annet Among for the position of Speaker of Parliament and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker, signaling their support for continuity in parliamentary leadership.

According to supporters, the endorsement reflects confidence in the current leadership’s ability to steer Parliament effectively while safeguarding national and regional interests.

However, the decision has sparked debate within sections of the Tooro community. Some leaders and residents argue that backing candidates from outside the sub-region for the top parliamentary seats could limit opportunities for Tooro-based leaders who may harbor ambitions for national leadership roles.

Critics contend that the move may narrow the region’s bargaining power in future political negotiations, while others view it as a strategic alignment aimed at fostering unity and strengthening collaboration at the national level.

Political analysts note that the unfolding debate underscores broader conversations about regional representation in key state positions and how best sub-regions can balance national cohesion with local political aspirations.

As discussions continue, several Tooro leaders are calling for wider consultations to ensure that the sub-region’s political voice and development priorities remain firmly represented in Uganda’s evolving governance landscape.
