Kampala: Over ten Democratic Party (DP) MPs and singer Joseph Mayanja known as Chameleone yesterday crossed to National Unity Platform (NUP), a political Party led by the Kyadondo East Legislator Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.
The singer was welcomed by party members together with several other people power diehards, an event that took place at the party headquarters in Kamwokya.
These come at a time when July 2019, chameleon officially joined the Democratic Party (DP) and declared his intention to contest for the Kampala Lord mayoral race in the 2021 General Elections under the party’s card and endorsement.
The singer who seeks to unseat the incumbent, Lord, Erias Lukwago, assured DP leadership and members, “Forget about my past. I’m a grown up who wants to contribute to liberating the nation. Our time is now. What affects the disadvantaged masses affects me too.”
The true ‘chameleone’ musician just like the name, has previously been linked to the ruling NRM, but he explained his association with the party to DP members saying “I went there (NRM) because of my popularity and strength. I was just hired (for performances) but I swear and you can trace my roots right from my grandparents as DP. You should not discriminate against me. I’m different from my brand name.”
Before changing colours to NUP yesterday, chameleon previously assured DP members that he had joined DP with a youth following, including two of his brothers; Pallaso and Weasel, and also promised that as a widely travelled individual, he wanted to see the city revamped and if given the chance, “we must uplift it to international standards.”
Meanwhile, DP President Norbert Mao appointed him the party’s national mobiliser.
However, yesterday, the singer assured NUP members that he had paid enough attention to all the political parties and he had made his final decision to permanently move with NUP due to its political ideologies and so believes not to change to any other political party.
Later on, Hon Kyagulanyi took it to his social media and posted;
“I today unveiled new fighters Dr. Jose, Mama Betty, comrade Allan, counsel Ssegona and Mwanga Kivumbi to the National Unity Platform. You are in the right vehicle to lead this country and the regime is even more scared.
