3 Perish In Kyotera Road Accident, Rescuers Steal Rice

Kyotera: Three people have been confirmed to have died in a nasty accident that occurred along the Kyotera-Masaka Road on Wednesday night.

The tragedy occurred at Ninzi Swamp along the Masaka-Kyotera Highway when a Canter truck  registration number UBD 074M which was loaded with bags of rice destined to Masaka from Mutukula lost  got a puncture, control and fell in the swamp. One of the eyewitnesses  identified as Andrew Mutyaba said that “The vehicle lost control, veered off the road and plunged in the swamp, killing all three people on board.” Traffic police that reached the scene shortly after the accident  identified the deceased as; John Paul Kasawuli, a teacher at Kiweewa Foundation primary school Kyotera, Muhammad Katumba the truck driver, and Elias Kavuma, the turn boy.

However, Paul Kangave, the Southern Regional Police Spokesperson said that “Police has information that the truck that was involved in the accident was carrying at least 400 bags of rice. However, only 100 of them have been retrieved so far.” Reports indicate that most of the rice was stolen by people who rushed to the scene shortly  after the accident. Kangave added that “The vehicle has been towed to Kalisizo Police Station while the bodies of the three victims have been taken to Kalisizo Hospital for postmortem as investigations continue.”
