5 UPDF Soldiers Netted Over Murder

Ntoroko, Uganda: The hunter has been hunted after five soldiers of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) being arrested over alleged murder.

The suspects are who are UPDF soldiers in Ntoroko district, are in custody at Muhoti Barracks in Kabarole district, for allegedly masterminding the death  Robert Akugizibwe, 22. They include Wilfred Kilima, David Kyakulaba, Opio Damazio, Stephen Agaba and Samuel Akidri. Sources reveal that Opio allegedly mobilized his colleagues from Habimbiri UPDF detach to arrest Akugizibwe, over a disagreement between him and Akuguzibwe. Although it is not yet clear how Akugizibwe ended up dying, his body was found floating in River Semuliki the next day with missing body parts. A source privy to the investigations revealed that prior to his death, Akugizibwe had gotten involved in a scuffle with Opio at a local bar in Haibale village on Thursday night. Thereafter,  it is alleged Opio returned to the Detach,  got his colleagues and together they went to arrest Akugizibwe, whose body was recovered in the river the next day. Captain Steven Tumwesigye, the Western Region UPDF Spokesperson confirmed the arrests and said the soldiers will be tried in the General Court Martial when investigations are completed.

He however noted that the UPDF is still investigating another case involving abuse of fire arms by its personnel. The case stems from a January 8, incident in which a UPDF soldier Pius Tumuhimbise shot his colleague Kenneth Mugisa and two civilians identified as Vincent Tuhaise and Kenneth Tafuga.
