Islamist rebels Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed 30 soldiers and wounded 70 others during fierce fighting last week in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, army officials said.
According to Major Mak Hazukai, they suffered the losses during the latest offensive on Thursday against the ADF rebels, in North Kivu province.
“Forty rebels were killed, including five of their leaders,” Hazukay said, adding government soldiers also lost several weapons to the rebels.
The army captured the ADF’s headquarters during the battle at Madina, and killed 40 rebel fighters, including five of their leaders, Hazukai added.
The army in November killed one of the top leaders of the ADF, Mouhamed Mukubwa, during fighting in Mapobu forest in Beni.
Local authorities and civil society groups say the ADF has killed more than a 1,000 people in the Beni region since 2014.
