Advocates through their association Uganda Law Society (ULS) under Probono project will tomorrow provide free legal services to Ugandans all over the country.
Speaking to media at ULS Secretariat in Kololo on Thursday, ULS’ Vice president Phiona Nabasa noted that they came up with this strategic objective to promote equal access to justice for indigent, marginalized and vulnerable persons in Uganda after they realized that many Ugandans couldn’t afford legal services due to financial constraints.
She noted that for the last 10 years, through its 1584 enrolled advocates across the country have extended access to justice to over 150000 indigent men, women and children in different parts of the country adding that last year, 10400 cases were registered and out of these, 546 were concluded successfully.
“As the gatekeeper of access to justice in this country, we owe the people of Uganda a justice system that is just in the results that it delivers, that is fair to all litigants regardless of their station of life, that is inexpensive, that delivers results in the shortest time possible, that is understandable, that responds to their needs and that is effective” he said.
Phiona called the general public to attend the 8th Annual Regional Probono day at various centres including Railway grounds Kampala, Fort Portal, Gulu, Masindi, Kabale, Arua, Jinja, Mbarara, Busoga and Soroti tomorrow Friday.
The organization has also secured permission for all advocates in the country not to go to work in order to enable them participate on their day.
