African Nations Championship: Uganda To Host 2022 FIM Africa Motorcross

Uganda is set to host the 2022 FIM Africa motocross for African Nations championship after a three year wait which was largely caused by the associated effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The much anticipated competition was officially launched on Wednesday 17 August 2022 and the event will run from the 20th to 21st August 2022 at the Garuga Victoria raceway.

Presiding over the launch, the newly appointed State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang expressed his delight at Uganda’s opportunity to host this continental competition, saying it’s a great platform to showcase Uganda to the world and also enhance motorsport in the country.

He commended the Federation of Motorsport (FMU) for their contribution towards the development of the sport and pledged for more government support.

He also urged the public to come out in big numbers to support team Uganda at this particular event.

In his remarks the president FMU – Dipu Ruparelia noted that this event will be notable on Uganda’s motorsport calendar as it will put it on a global platform hence helping the riders benefit from the exposure.

He also used the launch to assure riders and Ugandans that it’s an all systems go for the race; highlighting that the Garuga track has been approved by FIM Africa and meets all the international standards.

This year’s race has attracted over 100 riders from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Congo, Morocco and Botswana.

Team Uganda will be represented by Alestair Blick, Kylan Wekesa, Sharifah Kateete, Abigail Mwangala among others notably the Hon. James Akena-UPC president.

Uganda won the FIM Africa motocross for African Nations championship once in 2012 and is currently sits in the third position after the 2019 competition where South Africa won the title.

Uganda will be looking at winning this year’s title according to team captain Alestair Blick.

FIM Africa Motocross of Africa Nations is the highest ranking professional motorsport event in Africa.
