The Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development Frank Tumwebaze, has cautioned all Ugandans to take President Yoweri Museveni’s directive of wearing masks when in public places seriously, if the country is to successfully fight the spread of Coronavirus (COVID).

The Minister issued the warning in a tweet  on Sunday, in which he observed that instead of using the masks  to cover their mouths and noses, most Ugandans wear them on their chins, thereby not using them for the purpose they are meant for.

Tumwebaze’s concern came after an equally concerned Ugandan called Ramathan Goobi, a Makerere University Business School (MUBS) don tweeted thus; “I think Ugandans have become complacent with #COVIDー19. I am at @NsambyaHospital and there’s nothing like social distancing. No face masks (a few having them have lowered them to their chins); drums for washing hands are empty; folks are crowded, hugging; it’s all laissez-faire!”

In reply, Tumwebaze tweeted; “Talk about it. Masks only covering the chin as opposed to covering the mouth & Nose is common with  many p’ple. Fellow Ugandans let’s take serious the #COVID19UG preventive measures & correctly practice them as guided. Proper use of masks, hand washing, sanitizing & #Tonsemberera.”

It should be noted  that shortly after issuing the directive to all Ugandans to wear face masks last month, President Museveni cautioned that wearing masks as a way of preventing the spread of COVID-19 is mandatory and not just a fashion style. Actual two weeks ago alaw was passed that makes wearing of masks mandatory, and one can be charged in courts of law for not wearing one while in public.

It should be also remembered that the Covid19 has in the last one week increased to 417 with 84cases recorded in one day,the highest ever.

President Museveni, who is to address the nation today might change his earlier plans to unlock the country sooner than later considering the results the country is now getting with minimal relaxation of the same, which he announced last week.
