Uganda peoples defence forces (UPDF) has for the first time since Monday evening spoken out about the arrest of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Hon. Ssentamu kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
While talking on phone to TheSpy Uganda reporter, UPDF spokesperson Brig.Richard Karemire said that Kyadondo East legislator was arrested with weapons which are a monopoly of Defence Forces.
“We have charged him with treason, that’s why he has to face military court because he voluntarily handed himself to military service,” he said.
UPDF later issued a statement of the events surrounding Arua by-elections violence.
“The country may recall the ugly events of Monday 13th August 2018 in Arua Municipality as the campaigns came to a close , a crowd in an illegal procession pelted stones at the convoy of H.E the President breaking the rear glass window of one of the cars and later one person was shot dead in this whole fracas.
As part of the investigations into these acts of violence, the Police arrested key organizers and participants including Hon. Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East Constituency. During the search of his hotel room by investigators, he was found possessing arms and ammunition which are ordinarily a monopoly of the Defence Forces.
Consequently, Hon Kyagulanyi has today been arraigned before the General Court Martial in Gulu and charged under S 119 (1) (h) of the UPDF Act , 2005 on accounts of unlawful possession of fire arms,”read part of his statement.
Only Kyagulanyi’s lawyers Hon. Asuman Basalirwa and Hon.Medard Sseggona were allowed in the General court martial chaired by Gen.Andrew Gutti as he was being charged. He was remanded to Makindye military prison till 23rd August.
Bobi Wine’s social media admin.earlier posted thus; “Today we spent the whole day in Gulu. Bobi Wine was produced before the military court and charged with three counts of illegal possession of firearms. No one else was permitted to see him including his family and the press, except lawyers Hon. Asuman Basalirwa and Hon. Medard Ssegona. He has been remanded to Makindye Military prison until 23rd August, 2018.
According to the two lawyers, Bobi is in a very worrying state. He was badly tortured. He cannot stand, sit or even walk on his own. His face is badly deformed and he has a fractured back and hip. He has wounds all over his body, including one on his head and ear. The lawyers also say that he has not yet fully regained consciousness and does not fully appreciate what is going on around him. He could barely talk coherently to them.
Friends of Bobi home and abroad, this is the state of affairs!
Thank you all for the love, concern and support”
