Back To The Roots: Tooro’s “Empaako” Festival 3rd Edition Attracts Thousands

Tooro: The 3rd edition of the Tooro “Empaako” festival attracted thousands of revelers, some of whom trekked from as far as Kampala to grace the occasion. The event which started on June 22, ends today Saturday 25, 2022.

”The function, hosted annually by an events company, Evolution Times, aims at preservation of Tooro cultures and traditions, education, celebration of our identity and exhibition of our rich cultures to the rest of the world,” one of the organizers only known as Bashir told our reporter on phone.

This year’s festival that was held at Buhinga stadium under the theme; ‘My Culture & Me’ had a couple of activities among them including; Tooro cultural exhibition, ’empaako naming’, traditional games, cultural foods, traditional dances, grinding of millet on stones among others.

The function attracted cream de-la cream of Tooro key opinion leaders including ministers from Tooro Sub region, which included: State Minister of State for Information Communication Technology and National Guidance Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey Baluku, Minister for Tourism and Antiquities Hon Tom Butime, State Minister for Trade and Industry Hon. Harriet Ntabazi who happens to be former Bundibugyo District Woman MP.

The same event was graced by area honorable members of parliament among them including; Hon.Alex Ruhunda Fort Portal Central, Ann Mary Tumwine, Ntoroko District, Tom Bright, Kyaka Central, Davis Kamukama Bunyangabu and Bahireira Tumwekwase Sylvia MP for Kamwenge District.

Ntabazi got lucky when she was officially given ‘Empaako’ by the Tooro elders during the event and is now Adyeeri. She first had to be clothed with a bark cloth and a well prepared meal with millet and esabwe, coffee beans served to the elders before being accepted into the family.
