Basajjabalaba Applauds Museveni For Arresting Gen. Kayihura

While addressing graduands at Kampala International University’s 18th graduation ceremony on Saturday June 23rd, the Chairman Board of Trustees KIU and city Businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba thanked president Museveni (who was the guest of honor at the ceremony) for firing and arresting Gen. Kale Kayihura the former Inspector General of Police (IGP).

“Your Excellency, I would like to thank you and tell you that sacking and arresting the former IGP was the best decision. Your Excellency, you are very lucky, you are golden, you should go to church and pray to God because God likes you,” Basajjabalaba told President Museveni.

Basajjabalaba said this during KIU’s 18th graduation ceremony at their Kansanga main campus. He further thanked President Museveni that since his intervention on the insecurity situation in the country, the massive killings and kidnaps have reduced.

“Many investors had started running away from our country due to the massive killings but at least we are assured that the president has begun with the big fish to protect Ugandans and the country at large,” Bassajjabalaba added.

However, the President remained expressionless as Mr Basajjabalaba spoke about the high profile detainee at Makindye Military Barracks, a matter that most government and security officials have remained tight-lipped about.

Gen Kayihura, at the helm of police since September 2005, was sacked at the end of March and was arrested on June 13 on charges that are yet to be made public.

For many years regarded as the President’s chief enforcer on security matters, Gen Kayihura was a divisive figure, at one time being referred to as “Gen Tear Gas” by Ms Jacqueline Mbabazi, the wife of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

Two weeks since his arrest, Gen Kayihura has not been charged and information about the charges against him remains scanty.
President Museveni did not comment on Gen Kayihura’s arrest. The President instead urged the 2,410 graduands, who included Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among (FDC), to be disciplined, avoid alcohol and demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have learnt at their places of work and elsewhere.
