Basket Ball: Uganda Crowned Champions Of FIBA Africa Zone 5 Qualifier

A new star is born in Uganda women’s basketball ranks as Sylvia Nantongo put on a show to help her country to a 3-1 mark in the FIBA U18 Women’s Africa Championship Zone 5 qualifier over the weekend in Kampala, Uganda.

The Gazelles as the team is called, defeated Tanzania 63-46 in the deciding game played on Sunday.

Nantongo finished with a game-high of 17 points, she added 11 rebounds, 2 assists in addition to 3 blocks for hosts, while Getrude Nyamutoro and Mariam Namukwaya each notched 10 points.

Though, Tanzania had to play with just 8 players, Anjela Minja was the shinning star for her side with 10 points to her credit.

Uganda closed the regional qualifier with 9 points to top the table despite losing one game to Rwanda.

The loss to neighbouring Rwanda was not enough to stop from winning Zone 5, and secure their place in the Final Round.

Uganda started their campaign with a 71-50 win against Rwanda and followed it with a 64-36 victory against Tanzania.

In their second face-off with Rwanda on Friday, the Gazelles lost 52-43.

Nantongo’s night was rewarded with the Top Scorer award as well as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament while the Best Rebounder went to Magreth Manawa Mhondo of Tanzania.

Tanzania and Rwanda finished on 8 and 5 points for second and third places respectively.

The 2022 FIBA U18 Africa Women’s Championship will take place in Antananarivo, Madagascar between July 23 and August 1.
