Battle For UPL Championship Gains Momentum As Vipers, URA Secure Decisive Victories

The defending Champions Vipers SC clinched a well-deserved win against SC Villa away from home in the Star-Times Uganda Premier League matchday 24 on Saturday.

The Venoms scored three past Villa’s custodian Saidi Keni who later made history pulling back one to make it 3-1 in the 70th minute.

Bobosi Byaruhanga had opened the score to put the Venoms into the lead in the 27th minute at the Bombo Military Barracks grounds.

Dangerman Yunus Sentamu doubled the  lead in the 33rd minute thanks to a phenomenal assist from Paul Mucurezi who drove the ball past three defenders.

With Vipers poaching for more goals, Villa’s goalkeeper Keni brilliantly save Disan Galiwango’s effort with five minutes to the break to keep it 2-0 at halftime.

Mucurezi, Sentamu duo continued terrorising the Joggos defence only to be saved by the goalkeeper who splashed away Mucurezi’s long-distance effort six minutes into the second half.

The Joggos were reduced to ten men moments later following a straight red card to Gavin Kizito after a last man reckless challenge on the Congolese venoms goal Hunter Ceasar Manzoki.

Mucurezi ends his long wait after smashing home brilliantly from a freekick in the 67th minute to make it 3-0 before Villa’s custodian Keni scored a consolation three minutes later.

Mucurezi was awarded the man of the match prize and Vipers are on 53 points. They will host Mbarara City at St Mary’s Kitende in their next league game.

Elsewhere, table leaders, URA overcame Police FC 3-1 at Arena of Visions in Luweero.

The striking line of Steven Mukwala and Comwell Rwothomio looked very lethal with each scoring once. Mukwala broke the deadlock in the 34th minute and Joackiam Ojera doubled the lead for the tax collectors in the 47th minute before Rwothomio sealed the victory in the 61st minute. Fahad Kizito netted the only goal for the corps with three minutes on the clock.

Victory means the tax collectors remain top of the table at 54points, a point that separates them from the Venoms as they battle for this season’s title.

URA will play against Kyetume away from home in the next league game as the battle continues.
