Victoria University has received a major academic boost after being listed among nine accredited institutions approved to offer the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme in Uganda, marking a significant milestone for the university’s growing health sciences portfolio.

The accreditation was announced by the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) in a public notice dated April 16, 2026, in collaboration with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

The approved institutions include Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kampala International University Western Campus, Gulu University, Busitema University, Victoria University, Fins Medical University, Seeta University and Jeph International University.

The inclusion of Victoria University highlights its expanding role in science and technology-driven education, strengthening its position as one of Uganda’s emerging private universities committed to producing industry-ready professionals in health and medical sciences.

The PSU Secretary, Dr. Lutoti Stephen, noted that the accreditation is part of efforts to strengthen standards in pharmacy education and ensure that training institutions meet the requirements for producing competent professionals.

The PSU, operating under the Pharmacy and Drugs Act Cap 309, is mandated to regulate the training, registration and practice of pharmacists in Uganda. It emphasized that only graduates from accredited institutions will be eligible for professional recognition and registration.

“Universities must adhere to the standards, otherwise the PSU Council may withdraw their recognition,” the notice warned.

Under the new guidelines, all pharmacy students are required to register on the PSU Pharmacy Student Portal and obtain a unique student number. The registration deadline is March 31 each year.

Students pursuing pharmacy studies abroad are also required to register with the same system. Upon completion of training, graduates will sit qualifying examinations administered by the PSU Council, with pre-internship exams scheduled in January and June, and post-internship exams in February and August.

The move is expected to enhance quality assurance in pharmacy education and improve professional standards in Uganda’s healthcare system.

For Victoria University, the accreditation reinforces its commitment to innovation-driven learning and its growing contribution to Uganda’s health workforce development.
