Bobi Wine No Show At Court, Case Heard Via Teleconferencing

By Andrew Irumba
Kampala: Supporters, family members of well-wishers of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, were shocked this morning after he didn’t show up at Buganda Road as earlier scheduled.

Bobi Wine, who is on remand at Luzira prison for allegedly staging unlawful protests against the OTT Tax last year, was meant to return to court today for a bail hearing application. However, his People Power supporters, family members and relatives waited in vain. As they waited in a fully packed court that was heavily surrounded by military and police, news reached them that government had decided to teleconference Bobi Wine’s hearing. According to this procedure the case was to proceed without Bobi Wine being physically in court, but following the proceedings through a video camera connected to Buganda Road court.

The camera helps him to communicate directly with the magistrate and his lawyer in court. Many of Bobi Wine’s supporters and family members had to thus sit and listen in on the proceedings. However, his lawyers led by Asuman Basalirwa, and the relatives questioned the decision of the judiciary to try Bobi using this technology. Bobi was arrested from Mulago roundabout on April 29th, 2019 as he was heading to the CID headquarters in Kibuli to record a statement. He was whisked off to Nagalama Police Station where he recorded a statement before he was dragged to Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate’s Court and charged with disobedience of statutory duty. He was then remanded to Luzira prison till May 2nd, 2019 (today). We shall give you updates as they come up.
