A joint security team led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate and backed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces on Saturday reportedly raided the Nakasero residence of former Speaker Anita Annet Among as part of widening investigations into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.

The operation, which began in the afternoon, saw detectives, military intelligence personnel and forensic experts descend on the heavily guarded property to search documents and other materials believed to be relevant to the ongoing probe.

Sources familiar with the matter said the premises were sealed off as investigators combed through records linked to the former Speaker’s financial dealings and property acquisitions.

The dramatic development marks the most significant escalation yet in the legal and political storm surrounding Among.

It comes just days after Aisha Batala Naluzze confirmed that the Inspectorate of Government had received and begun processing a petition alleging that Among may have breached the Leadership Code Act by failing to fully declare her assets and sources of wealth.

The complaint, filed by a coalition of lawyers and civil society activists, called for a comprehensive audit of her wealth declarations, expenditure patterns and financial interests.

At the center of the controversy are reports of high-value assets, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan allegedly worth billions of shillings and imported from the United Kingdom.

The raid also unfolds against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter power struggle within the ruling National Resistance Movement and the Patriotic League of Uganda.

In recent days, Muhoozi Kainerugaba has posted a series of strongly worded messages condemning corruption and what he described as extravagant spending by public officials.

“Our job is to serve Ugandans, not ourselves! I cannot support corruption! I risked my life to make this country peaceful. Now that it is, it will not be taken by thieves. Never!” Muhoozi wrote.

Although he did not mention Among by name, political observers widely interpreted the comments as directed at the former Speaker.

Security sources say authorities are increasingly concerned about the role of money and patronage in the battle for leadership of the 12th Parliament.

The contest has become one of the most closely watched political developments in the country, with powerful actors within the establishment reportedly backing alternative candidates for the Speakership.

The latest operation follows the reported arrest of Justine Nameere Nsubuga, who had publicly defended Among and engaged in a heated exchange online with PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda.

By Saturday evening, neither the Criminal Investigations Directorate nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces had issued an official statement regarding the raid, and it remained unclear whether any property had been seized or whether arrests were imminent.

However, the operation is expected to send fresh shockwaves through Uganda’s political establishment as investigations gather momentum and the race for control of Parliament reaches a decisive stage.

For Anita Among, once one of the most influential figures in Uganda’s political hierarchy, the unfolding investigations represent the most serious legal and political challenge of her career.
