Cabinet Splits Masaka City Into Two!

By Peter Ssebulime

The leadership of Masaka has on Wednesday November 13, 2019 discovered that Cabinet did not approve either of the proposals submitted by both Masaka District or Masaka Municipal Councils about the status of Masaka city but instead proposed dividing the city into two divisions.

This revelation was made during the Council  sitting, at Municipality offices, where Masaka District Chairman Jude Mbabaali told Councillors that Cabinet had made adjustments which had to be adhered to.

He told Council that “Yesterday I was invited on short notice alongside the Mayor Masaka, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kweyamba Ruhemba and Town Clerk Paul Omoko to a meeting  to discuss the operationalization of Masaka and other cities approved by cabinet.”

He added that “Cabinet approved part of our proposal and created a city that will comprise of the whole of Masaka Municipality, the whole of Mukungwe Sub-county, the whole of Kabonera Sub-county, 4 parishes from Kalungu Sub-county and 2 parishes from Kingo Sub county”.

Mbabaali noted that; “The city will be a regional City comprising of two City Divisions known as Kimanya-Kabonera Division and Nyendo-Mukungwe Division.

Each of the said divisions will have parliamentary constituencies depending on the number of people in the Division and this will be done by the Electoral Commission in conjunction with Ministry of Local Government after the said approved cities have been presented to parliament. “

He explained that “We were told that the Administrative structure of the city will be like that of Kampala City before it became an Authority, with the Political head called a City Mayor, operating with a City Council and a Town Clerk.”
He concluded by saying that “It is our duty to update all stakeholders on this matter and we shall keep you updated as and when we get more information.”
