Political commentator and former RDC Charles Rwomushana has been released after spending the weekend in the custody of security operatives, TheSpy Uganda has learnt.

Rwomushana was reportedly dropped at his home at around 2:00am on Monday morning by a group of soldiers attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC), according to sources familiar with the events.

Our sources say that upon reaching his home, the soldiers saluted Rwomushana before leaving, bringing to an end a weekend of uncertainty over his whereabouts.

Rwomushana had reportedly been picked up on Saturday from the 97.3 Radio Simba studios in Bukoto, where he had gone for his regular political show, Gasimbaggane Ne’banamawulire programme hosted by Peter Kibazo and Dick Mivule.

According to sources, the operatives who took him away were dressed in plain clothes. They reportedly whisked him away from the studios and drove him to an undisclosed location.

For nearly two days, his whereabouts remained unclear, triggering concern among colleagues, friends and members of the public.

He resurfaced on Monday morning following his release and return home.

It remains unclear why Rwomushana was arrested, where exactly he was held, or whether he was questioned about any specific offence. No formal charge against him has been publicly announced at the time of publication.

Rwomushana is a veteran Ugandan political commentator whose outspoken views on government, opposition politics and national affairs have made him a familiar voice on radio and television talk shows.

He previously served as a resident District Commissioner to president Museveni and has for years remained active in Uganda’s political discourse, frequently appearing on media platforms to analyse government policy and political developments.

Rwomushana is also former CA delegate (member of Parliament), the assembly that manufactured Uganda’s 1995 constitution as amended.

His style of political commentary often blunt and highly critical has earned him both a strong following and controversy.

His latest detention comes amid continued scrutiny of the manner in which security agencies handle arrests and questioning of political actors, activists, journalists and public commentators.

The circumstances surrounding his weekend detention remain unclear, and questions are now likely to focus on which security agency authorised his arrest, where he was taken and what transpired during the period he was held.

TheSpy Uganda is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding Rwomushana’s detention and has sought further information from relevant authorities.

The CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba last week outed a tweet in which he ordered that security personnel is anymore allowed to carry our an arrest of a civilian inplain clothes or without name tag and official uniform. However, just few days, Rwomushana was picked by plain clothed security personnel who didn’t even identify themselves. #TheSpy
