The head of the State House Investors Protection Unit, Col Edith Nakalema, has sounded a strong warning to corrupt networks she described as “mafias,” accusing them of defrauding investors of billions of shillings and sabotaging Uganda’s economic growth.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with Executive Directors from key government agencies, Col Nakalema emphasized that protecting investors is directly tied to safeguarding jobs for Ugandans.

“Some highly organized mafias in Kampala have defrauded our investors of billions of shillings, claiming to secure them lucrative deals in government agencies when, in fact, they do not,” Nakalema revealed. “Let’s give these investors protection and save them from losing billions to mafias. This money will be used to create jobs for Ugandans.”

The closed-door meeting was attended by Dr. Chris Mukiza (UBOS), Dr. Patrick Birungi (UDC), and Dr. Silver Mugisha (NWSC), among others.

Nakalema cautioned agency bosses not to bow to pressure from shadowy figures who, she said, operate for personal enrichment rather than national interest.

“Mafias often try to scare EDs away from legitimate deals, threatening job loss. Remember, you were appointed by the President, not these so-called mafias. Report them to me, and I will handle the matter,” she said, reaffirming her direct mandate from President Museveni to fight corruption and protect investors.

Adding his voice, Dr. Mukiza, the Executive Director of UBOS, said the responsibility of CEOs was not only to manage their agencies but also to shield investments from misinformation and distortions.

“CEOs must ensure that negative forces do not interfere with the smooth implementation of investment projects,” he stressed.

The meeting underscored government’s resolve to guarantee a safe investment climate, free from corruption and manipulation. Nakalema’s message was clear: the state will not tolerate mafias who exploit investors and undermine Uganda’s economic transformation agenda.

By directly linking investor confidence to job creation, Col Nakalema positioned the Investors Protection Unit as a critical safeguard for both foreign capital and Ugandan livelihoods.
