By Spy Uganda

There was drama in Moroto district on Friday after the Inspector of Mines for Karamoja Region was blocked from accessing Moroto mines.

Spy Uganda has learnt that Gerald Eneku, the
the Inspector of Mines for Karamoja Sub- Region, was denied access to mining sites in Rupa Sub County, Moroto District, by soldiers manning security there.

Eneku had gone to Sunblet Mining Group Limited and Multi Task Company that replaced DAO Marble Limited, for an inspection and assessment of the activities.

He was however blocked by soldiers manning the gates and ordered to go away. Both companies have mining leases for marble in Rupa Sub-county.

He explained that much as he introduced himself and explained the reasons for his visit, none of soldiers gave him audience. Eneku suspects some illegal activities like mining of other minerals other than marble taking place inside the protected mines. He wants the companies to be investigated.

Maj. Telesphor Turyamumanya, the 3rd Division Spokesman, said that the soldiers deployed at the mines work under the command of companies engaged in mining activities.

Attempts for a comment from either of the companies were futile after the officers at the site declined to speak to the press.

However, locals in the area reeval that incidents of soldiers blocking officials, local leaders and residents from accessing the mines are becoming a concern in Karamoja.

Last year, Moroto district chairman, Andrew Keem Napaja was denied access to DAO Marble Limited when he went for a monitoring visit.
