COVID-19: Uganda’s Cases Rise To 1223 As Global Cases Approach 19M

Kampala: Ministry of Health has registered 10 new COVID-19 cases from samples tested on August 5, 2020, raising total infections to 1223 with 1102 recoveries and 5 deaths.

Of the ten (10) confirmed cases, three (3) are truck drivers while seven (7) are contacts to previously confirmed cases.

Regarding the three (3) truck drivers, two (2) arrived from Kenya via Malaba point of entry while one (1) arrived frrom South Sudan via Elegu point of entry.

While the seven (7) contacts to previously confirmed cases include six (6) from Namisindwa district, one (1) Indian who is a resident of Kibuli in Kampala Metropolitan Area.

Meanwhile, eleven (11) foreign truck drivers that include 6 Kenyans, 4 Tanzanians and 1 Eritrea tested positive for COVID-19 at the border points of entry and their entry into the country was not permitted.  

In the same vein, 2,078 samples were tested from different points of entry, 1,499 were samples from alerts and contacts that equates 3,577 samples that was tested the in whole day making 288,367 total samples tested since the outbreak.

COVID-19 Globally:

The Coronavirus pandemic death toll passed 707,000 late on August 5, 2020 according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

Meanwhile, the global infection rate passed 18.8 million. The US accounts for the highest portion of COVID-19 deaths, with 158,256. The next worst-affected in terms of the number of lives lost is Brazil with 97,256.

US: Donald Trump on Wednesday repeated that he believes Coronavirus will “go away”, despite his top public health expert warning that it could take most of 2021 or longer to get the pandemic under control and that it is “unlikely” the virus can ever be eradicated.

Florida has surpassed 500,000 Coronavirus cases as testing ramps up following a temporary shutdown of some sites because of Tropical Storm Isaiah.

California reported 202 new virus deaths, marking its second-deadliest day of the pandemic. The state has had 9,703 COVID-19 fatalities.
