COVID & Floods A Side! Sudan Declares State Of Emergency, Imposes Curfew Over Bloody Tribal Clashes

Sudan declared a state of emergency and imposed a night curfew in some parts of the coastal Red Sea state on Monday, after tribal violence that killed at least five people, a statement and state media said.

The statement by the state governor media office gave no details of the clashes and did not mention casualties.

However, state news agency Suna quoted a local medical official as saying the clashes left at least five people killed and 13 wounded.

The report said the clashes broke out in some areas in the city of Port Sudan.

Red Sea state, in eastern Sudan, has a history of deadly clashes between the Beni Amer and Nuba, even after leaders from the two tribes signed a peace agreement to stem the violence in 2019.

Authorities in Sudan say at least 50 people were killed and more than 100 others injured after three days of clashes between ethnic groups in West Darfur earlier this month.

The clashes between Arab and Masalit tribes began in January 2021 in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state.

The Committee of West Darfur Doctors confirmed the death toll and called on the government to secure access for the committee to collect full figures.

According to Khalid Shogar of the Committee of West Darfur Doctors, the committee counted 50 people killed in the violence, with the death toll reaching 132 people. Others killed and injured the committee couldn’t count as a result of access being restricted due to the bad security situation, he added.

Sudan’s Security and Defense Council accused unnamed armed militias of fueling the conflict.
