Death Of Tegu: Makerere University Takes Issues To Court, Police Responds

Kampala: Makerere Law Society has joined the Makerere University fraternity, and the country at large to condemn the death of Emmanuel Tegu, a third year Veterinary student who was murdered on 28th June, 2020.

Students say the acts of brutality leading to his death were not only criminal but also executed with grave disregard for humanity and the rule of law.

“The violence and impunity with which these were executed shows the extent to which the respect for the rule of law and confidence in state action has greatly declined” statement read. 

For the above reason, the law students say they will continue to be at the forefront of advocacy for the protection and act of rights and freedoms of students and Ugandans in general

The society of lawyers have also vowed to take this issue to courts of law since such behavior goes against the dictates of the Constitution of the Republic Uganda, particularly Article 24 which guarantees the freedom of every Ugandan citizen from cruel and inhumane or degrading treatment.

“We shall therefore not hesitate to seek redress from the ts of law to defend the rights and freedoms of the students of Makerere University, and the country as a whole” Statement read.

The Society further asked Police to conduct immediate investigations in the incident and issue a report in this respect such that perpetrators are held fully accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

In regard to the above, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango has said investigations into the death of the student have intensified and security has subsequently arrested 10 people .

“Today, police carried out an intelligence led operation and arrested 10 suspects in connection to the death of Tegu. All the suspects are residents of Makerere University in Kampala and are detained at Wandegeya Police Station pending interrogation,” Onyango said.

The Kampala police mouthpiece explained that all the suspects whose identities will be disclosed after interrogation, are said to have participated in the mob action that led to Tegu’s death.

“There are other suspects who took off after receiving information of the death of the student, but our teams are pursuing them,” he said.

Tegu’s death has kicked off storm especially on social media, with several commentators seeking for justice.

In a tweet, presidential hopeful and People Power movement leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine expressed dissatisfaction about the way Tegu’s matter had been handled.
