Don’t Be Conned: Army Cautions Public About Fraudsters Soliciting Financial Assistance For Sanctioned Kandiho

By Spy Uganda

Kampala: Few days after US slapped sanctions against Uganda’s spy chief Abel Kandiho, a section of ”brave” fraudsters saw it as an opportunity to con Ugandans in the guise of raising financial assistance to him.

These fraudsters have allegedly been asking ”merciful” Ugandans to help assist the Director of Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI) to make ends meet.

Now, UPDF spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso has warned Ugandans not to co-ordinate with these fraudsters and actually asked them to report them to Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters.

“There are conmen soliciting funds in an act of extortion claiming that CMI Director-General Abel Kandiho is seeking assistance since the United States put sanctions on him. We would like to inform the public that this is not true,” says Byekwaso.

She further clarifies that Kandiho has not come out anywhere to beg for financial support.

US Sanctioned Kandiho last year in December saying he and other CMI officers targeted individuals due to their nationality, political views, or criticism of the Ugandan government.

It said individuals were taken into custody and held, often without legal proceedings, at CMI detention facilities where they were subjected to horrific beatings and other egregious acts by CMI officials, including sexual abuse and electrocutions, often resulting in significant long-term injury and even death.

US added that in some cases, Kandiho was personally involved, leading interrogations of detained individuals.

Speaking to the media then, Kandiho brushed off the sanctions, saying they were politically motivated and inconsequential, and warned that unilateral punishments imposed by the U.S. risked alienating its allies.
