Kampala: Prominent human rights lawyer and founder of Chapter Four Civil Society Organisation, Nicholas Opiyo has been jailed till January 11, 2021, following the further adjournment of his case.
The above was after our reporter Andrew Irumba went early morning to Anti corrupt Court in Kololo expecting Nicholas to either appear physically or via video conferencing. Unfortunately, the journalists had to sit up to 11am when they were informed that Anti-corruption court Kololo doesn’t have a video link hence advising them to go to Buganda road Court where he was presented via zoom.
In Court, Opio who is battling with money laundering and related cases according to police and the state, was further remanded to Kitalya Prison on an option to apply for bail before that due date. Meanwhile, his lawyers said will apply for his application on Wednesday before the High Court Judge Jane Kajunga.
Opiyo was mid-December picked up from Lamaro restaurant located in Kamwokya together with other lawyers including Herbert Dakasi, Anthony Odur and Esomu Obure, and Hamid Tenywa before being handcuffed and detained at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka.
However, on 24th, December 2020, the four co-accused were released on police bond and asked to report back to the Special Investigations Division in Kireka on December 29, 2020.
