Uganda’s real estate sector last week paid glowing tribute to one of its most influential figures, business mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievers Award at the National Property Awards, held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

The award, presented by Dr. Edwin Musiime, Chairman of the Uganda Homeowners Association, recognised Sudhir’s outstanding contribution to the growth of Uganda’s property industry, particularly his efforts to promote innovation and expand access to affordable housing.

The ceremony attracted senior government officials, captains of industry, and top real estate stakeholders, all gathered to celebrate the businessman whose vision and investments have transformed Uganda’s skyline.

“Dr. Sudhir has dedicated his life to raising living standards for Ugandans. His influence goes beyond real estate—his investments span education, healthcare, hospitality, and recreation,” Dr. Musiime said in his keynote address.

Through Meera Investments and the Ruparelia Group, Sudhir has established one of the largest property portfolios in the country, with landmark developments including Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Pearl Tower, Kingdom Kampala, and the recently launched One-10 Apartments in Kololo. His business empire also extends into banking, hospitality, agriculture, and education, making it one of Uganda’s most diversified and powerful enterprises.

Sudhir’s entrepreneurial journey is an inspirational one. He started modestly in the UK, where he saved $25,000 before returning to Uganda in 1985. He began with a beer distribution business in Kampala before venturing into property development—a vision that would later reshape the real estate landscape of the capital and beyond.

During the event, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, Minister of State for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, emphasized Uganda’s urgent housing deficit, currently estimated at seven million units. She called for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector players like Sudhir to bridge the gap.

Her sentiments were echoed by Mugabi Lazarus, Director of the Board of Governors at AREA Uganda, who advised households to spend no more than 30% of their income on housing costs. He stressed that while the housing shortage is a global issue, Uganda could accelerate progress through practical policies and strategic partnerships.

The recognition of Dr. Sudhir not only celebrates his business milestones but also underscores his wider contributions to Uganda’s social and economic development. His investments have created thousands of jobs, advanced education and healthcare access, and provided recreational spaces, cementing his legacy as a visionary entrepreneur and a nation builder.
