Ebola Risk At Uganda Congo Border Worrying As Refugee Influx Heightens

Kasese, Uganda: The increasing numbers of refugees fleeing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo has increased the risk of an Ebola outbreak in Uganda, according to the ministry of health.

Dr. Diana Atwiine, the permanent secretary ministry of health noted: “There is an increased risk rate of Ebola outbreak because many refugees are flowing in from Mpondwe, Arua airstrip, Entebbe airport and other places.” She added: “We are trying to immunize all people entering Uganda from Congo. So far we have immunized 600 medics at all entry points and several refugees.”

Congo is currently engulfed in riots and violence following the presidential election that was held last week. Results of the much contested presidential election haven’t been announced by President Joseph Kabila’s government, something that has created tensions and animosity in DR.Congo, on top of sparking off riots. The riots have since intensified as the Catholic church announcing that although the government has delayed to announce the election results, they (the Church) know who won the election. The violent riots and battles between police, the army and politicians has forced many people out of their homes and thousands of them are fleeing to Uganda.

The latest we have is that the US President has dispatched  a contingent of 1500 US Commandos to dislodge Kabila from power should he refuse to step down in case he loses the election.
