The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that presidential candidates will officially begin their campaigns on September 29, 2025, as part of the roadmap toward Uganda’s 2026 General Elections.

The announcement was made by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama during a press briefing in Kampala, where he emphasized the Commission’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to electoral laws throughout the campaign period.

“The early announcement and clear roadmap are intended to give candidates and political parties sufficient time to plan their campaigns while ensuring the process remains peaceful and organized,” Byabakama said.

As part of preparations, the EC also unveiled a newly developed site that will host next week’s presidential nominations, a milestone that marks the beginning of the final stretch to the elections.

The site, located on a 3.5-acre section of a 10-acre property, was handed over by the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) on Friday, September 19, 2025.

NHCC Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Kaijuka described the project as “historic,” noting that the facility was completed in just six weeks after groundbreaking on July 30.

“This was a tall order for us, but with support from all sides, we have delivered a professionally and technically prepared site that meets the needs of the nomination period,” Kaijuka said. “After the elections, we shall continue with the long-term plan to build the permanent headquarters of the Electoral Commission.”

The venue is equipped with paved grounds, electricity, solar lighting, parking, an ICT hub with internet access, and CCTV surveillance, features that Byabakama hailed as “a confirmation of the government’s commitment to ensure the democratic processes of the country thrive.”

Byabakama further urged security agencies to draw up a detailed traffic management plan for the area, noting that the new site offers improved access routes compared to the previous Kyambogo venue.

With the presidential nominations set for next week and campaigns officially kicking off at the end of the month, the EC’s preparations mark a decisive step in Uganda’s journey toward the 2026 polls, in which millions of Ugandans are expected to participate.
