EC To Start Verification Of National Voters Register On October 16, 2019

Kampala: As Uganda prepares for the forthcoming general elections in 2021, the Electral Commission has started verification of the national voters register and has revealed that the exercise officially starts on October 16, 2019.

Hajjat Aisha Lubega, the Deputy Chairperson Electoral Commission, revealed on Friday that “The verification process of the national voters register and the comparison of the register for special interests group will start on October 16th, to enable all Ugandans be ready for voting in 2021.”

She added that “The reason why we have done this as early as possible is to ensure that we correct all the errors in the national voters register.”

She urged local leaders to work hand in hand with the EC Teams in their areas to identify who is fit for this register.

She noted that local leaders will be helpful in the identification of bonafide residents of different villages.

Hajjati Lubega however refuted allegations thatthe Commission raised the nomination fee to for for presidential candidates to Shs100m.

She added that “The Ccommission does not have the mandate to determine the amount to be paid by candidates vying for any position.”

Earlier on, the EC boss Justice Simon Byabakama had promised to release the regulations which will be followed by voters in the upcoming general elections.

“We are soon working on the national register and those who will qualify to vote will be the only ones in the national register, 18 years and above and also must be verified by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA),” Byabakama said last week.

He added that “Those who have National IDs but have not registered in the national voters register to vote will not vote, because the primary qualification for someone to vote is being registered in a national voters register.”

The Commission also warned the general public, and particularly stakeholders in the electoral process that forgery of election materials is a criminal act.
