The former Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor George Mondo Kagonyera has urged government to give scholarships to less privileged best performing students, instead of supporting those who can afford education from first class schools.
Prof. Kagonyera said this while delivering his speech during the 21st graduation ceremony of Ndejje University, at which at least 2000 graduands were awarded certificates, diplomas, bachelors, and Masters into various disciplines. Among these, 1,024 are males making 51.5%, and 964 are females equivalent to 48.8%.
He said : “It’s unfortunate for the government to ignore the less privileged, leaving them behind to suffer as the rich get scholarships and education financial support.”
He further lashed out at students who involve themselves in strikes due to various reasons saying, “This is not the right measure to solve problems.”
Dr. Wilberforce Kisamba Mugerwa, the Ndejje University Chancellor and also former executive director National Planning Authority, appealed to government to support private schools, institutions, and universities because they are doing its work of equipping Ugandans with skills and knowledge, since these are the driving forces behind any country’s economic development.
He thus advised them to always sit down with concerned authorities to put the situation in order.
