Electoral Commission Set Dates For Voters’ Register Update Ahead Of 2021 General Elections

As a way of streamlining the electoral process ahead of the 2021 general election,  the Electoral Commission will conduct the update of the National Voters Register, (NVR),  throughout the country from Thursday, November 21, 2019 to Wednesday, December 11, 2019.

Spy Uganda understands that from the Commission that during this exercise,  persons who are qualified to register as voters will be registered.

In addition to that voters who may wish to change their polling stations will have the opportunity to transfer, while others will also use the same chance to verify details of their respective polling stations.

According to EC officials, the exercise is aimed at giving all eligible voters in Uganda to prepare early enough, such that they can exercise their constitutional right to vote for their leaders when election time comes in 2021.

All voters have thus been advised to mark the dates and ensure that they those who are not on the Voters Register are registered, such that they are able to vote when the time comes and to avoid any inconveniences that  might arise.

It should be noted that the Commission had earlier set November 2019 and January 2020 for the general update of the National Voters Register.

But while addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Justice Simon Byabakama, the Electoral Commission chairperson, said that “The commission has concluded with demarcation of polling stations and will now embark on updating the register.”

He added that “During the exercise, registers to be updated are the National Voters Register (Presidential, General Parliamentary and Local Government Councils Elections), Voters Register for Persons with Disability Councils/Committees Elections, Persons with Disability Representatives to Parliament, Persons with Disability Representatives to Local Government Councils and register for voters of Youth Councils/Committees Elections.”
