Joint security forces have recovered an illegal firearm in Kotido District following an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal activity in the Karamoja sub-region.

According to security sources, the operation conducted on Sunday, April 12, 2026, by the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) resulted in the forceful recovery of a submachine gun (SMG) rifle with one round of ammunition.

The weapon was recovered from Lolem Lopusiteba, a 68-year-old resident of Kanamwar Village in Longaroe Sub-county.

Authorities say the development is linked to ongoing investigations into a recent highway robbery along the Kaabong Kotido road. The suspect’s son, identified as Locheng Apalothia, is alleged to have used the firearm in the incident.

In a related operation earlier this month, on April 2, joint security teams impounded 107 head of cattle and three donkeys from the same village in connection with the robbery.
The recovered firearm and the suspect are currently in UPDF custody as investigations continue.

Security officials say operations to disarm illegal gun holders and curb crime are ongoing across the Karamoja sub-region, with the aim of restoring peace and stability in the area.
