Former BoU Deputy Governor Kasekende Lands On Hard Times, Sells Off Swanky Bunga Apartments At Shs4Bn

The Coronavirus (COVID-19 ) economic lockdown seems to be taking toll on former Bank of Uganda deputy Governor Dr Louis Kasekende.

Our Spies reveal that Kasekende, who left Bank of Uganda in February this year after the expiry of his contract, recently sold off an apartment block he owned in Bunga, Kawuku at USD1.1 million, approximately Shs4Bn, to  real estate businessman only identified as Kikambi.

Although it is not clear why Kasekende decided to sell off the property, it must be noted that some years ago, a whistleblower wanted Kasekende’s source of wealth investigated, after it emerged that he had mysteriously amassed wealth.

 The Inspector General of Government (IGG), revealed at the time that Kasekende was earning an annual salary of  Shs559, 848,000, and allowances of 162,098,748 at BoU.

He also had other sources of income that included rental income, pension from AFDB and Bank of Uganda (read declaration of income, assets and liabilities form under the leadership code Act 2002.

However, investigators at the Auditor General’s office were shocked to discover that some of Kasekende’s  commercial rental properties include; Plot 3 Ggaba Close, Plot 1475 Lubowa Estate Wakiso that is co-owned with E. Kasekende and valued at Shs2b and Plot 12 Corporation Road Ntinda and valued at Shs0,39b. Others are; Plot 2 Bukoto Rise Ntinda, valued at 1.3b, Plot 2B Makindu Lane Kololo, valued at 2.0b Buloba and Plot 706 Block 314, valued at 0.5b among others.

Kasekende also listed three vehicles including a Mercedes Benz ML 350 (UAG 922E), purchased at $42,000 (about Shs150m), a Mercedes S320 (UAK 150Q), purchased at Shs48m and a Toyota Hilux UAF 840Y purchased at Shs19m.

He also owns 3489 shares in Greenhill Holdings, the company behind Greenhill Academy, plus several other properties.

During the time he was being investigated in regards to how he acquired the wealth, Kasekende revealed that he earned the money to buy and develop the properties from his salary savings, travel allowances and research grants, although he never declared documents pertaining to the same.
