Four Held For Faking MTN Airtime Scratch Cards

The police at Nagalama Police has in custody four men for faking MTN airtime recharge cards.

The four have been identified as Benin Biraaro, Robinson Muheki, Simon Bwambale and Isaac Akankwatsa.

Police has been trailing the suspects for over seven months before being apprehended. This followed a number of cases of aggravated robbery reported by victims.

According to the investigators, it is alleged that the suspects specialize in printing fake vouchers popularly known as recharge cards from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)seal and then send them to Uganda through Kihihi,a small town in Kanungu District, approximately 30 kilometres by road from the border to be distributed to unsuspecting victims.

The scam was unearthed after a number of complaints reported at police about robbers who pose as dealers in recharge cards.

It’s believed that the suspects setup meetings with potential buyers,negotiate a favourable price and at the day of paying for the merchandise they turn up with armed personnel and rob the unsuspecting buyers at gunpoint.

We have arrested four and one other suspect is on the run however we are working with other security agencies to stamp out the scam.

Police recovered Ushs 112.5 million worth of fake airtime recharge cards and the suspects are currently detained at Nagalama Police Station as investigations are ongoing.
