Workers in Bunyangabu District on Thursday turned out in significant numbers to elect their new leaders under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Workers League structure. The peaceful and transparent elections were conducted by lining up behind candidates, resulting in the election of both contested and unopposed leaders.

The elections, held across the district, are part of a nationwide NRM initiative aimed at empowering special interest groups—such as workers, entrepreneurs, youth, women, and veterans—to participate actively in leadership and decision-making at all levels.

Unopposed Victories

  • Kyaligonza John was elected unopposed as Chairperson of the Bunyangabu District Workers League.
  • Nyakaisiki Evelyn secured the position of Vice Chairperson without opposition.
  • Kabagambe Wilson, Mayor of Kibiito Town Council, also stood unopposed and took the seat of Secretary for Finance.

Contested Races

  • The race for General Secretary saw Katutu Lilian emerge victorious with 20 votes, defeating Gamukama James, who received 4 votes. A third candidate, Aliganyira Chris, withdrew at the time of voting.
  • In another closely contested position, Kiiza Clovice Pataleo from Nyakigumba Town Council was elected Publicity Secretary with 15 votes, narrowly defeating Kasangaki William, who secured 12 votes.

Voices Of Leadership

Musiime Robert, the NRM District Registrar, praised the orderly conduct of the elections and the high voter turnout.

“I thank all the workers who came out to exercise their right to vote. These leaders will now represent your concerns at workplaces and within the party structure,” he said. He also commended the security personnel for swiftly handling minor disputes raised by candidates fearing defeat.

Newly elected Chairperson Kyaligonza John thanked voters for their support and called for unity:

“We shall address challenges like lack of maternity and sick leave, inadequate worker protections, and ensure the wage bill is implemented. Workers are the backbone of our institutions, and they deserve better.”

Kabagambe Wilson, the incoming Secretary for Finance, emphasized trust and accountability:

“Managing finances requires integrity. I’m humbled by the confidence you’ve shown in me, and I’m ready to serve with transparency and dedication.”

Publicity Secretary-elect Kiiza Clovice Pataleo promised to amplify the voices of the workers:

“Many workers don’t even know who their leaders are. That has to change. My office is open to anyone facing workplace challenges, and I will be your voice.”

The NRM continues with elections today for other special interest groups, including the District Executive Committee, entrepreneurs, and veterans. These elections are designed to strengthen grassroots leadership and ensure inclusive governance across all demographics.

The successful election of Workers League leaders marks a new chapter for labor representation in Bunyangabu District, bringing in fresh leadership committed to advancing the rights, protections, and welfare of workers.
