The coordinator of government funded poverty alleviation project Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh has refuted allegations that he was behind the demolition of  St. Peter’s Church Ndeeba, which was razed down on Monday.

The Anglican Church building in the heart of Kampala was demolished early this week by bailiffs on orders of  city businessman Dodovico Mwanje, who claims to own the land on which the church, which had spent 45 years, had been constructed.

Shortly after the demolition, rumours started spreading that Dodovico had liaised with Gen. Salim Saleh to have the church demolished, such that they can pave way for an investor to erect a commercial plaza  on the contentious prime plot of land.

While commenting about the allegations on Wednesday, Gen. Salim Saleh, who had appeared before a conference organized by the bishops of the Anglican Church, said that; “I’m hearing rumours that Saleh you’re grabbing church land. So I want to swear before you the bishops and the Archbishops that in the name of God, I’m not involved in these church invading practices.”

Following the demolition of the church which was condemned by President Yoweri Museveni and the Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, among others, three police commanders and 11 others were arrested, because they did so contrary to a government directive stopping evictions during the lockdown.

Those arrested are; the DPC Katwe, SP David Epedu, OC Station Ndeeba Police Station, ASP Mugira Yeko Kato, and the Field Force Unit commander Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) South Region, ASP Isabirye Kaloli.

“They are being charged with neglect of duty. We want to warn the general public who are planning to evict people during this period of COVID19 that they risk being arrested and charged in courts of law if they go ahead with their intentions,” Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson said in a statement.
