Kampala: It was a horrific movie-like for the United States Envoy to Uganda yesterday as they tried to visit house arrested Museveni’s top critic Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine at his home in Magere, a Kampala city suburb when the government’s furious face masked army kicked them out like empty mineral water bottles under unclear reasons.

Disappointed US Ambassador Natalie E.Brown who had led the team, later spit venom on the embassy’s official Facebook page, wondering why the government could deny her chance to check on Hon. Kyagulanyi’s health and safety, given that he’s effectively been unable to leave his home, with security forces surrounding his residence.

Natalie said Uganda’s unlawful acts like harassment of opposition candidates, campaign staff, and supporters; suppression of the media and civil society organization activities; and a nationwide internet shutdown before, during, and after voting day and the effective house arrest of a presidential candidate continue a worrying trend on the course of Uganda’s democracy.

Ambassador Natalie warned the Ugandan government, “Nobody should be unlawfully denied a means to communicate and the freedom to leave their home, should they choose to do so.”

It is worth noting that Kyagulanyi previously said his life was being threatened following Thursday’s election which saw Yoweri Museveni win a sixth elected term amid reports of election irregularities.

Meanwhile, President Museveni has denied rigging the elections but the EU, the United Nations and several rights groups have raised voter fraud concerns.

The US has also called for investigations into reports of irregularities in the election and continuous violation of human rights by Museveni’s government saying true peace is not merely the absence of tension but it is the presence of justice for all.

Ambassador Natalie quoting Martin Luther King, Jr, further tweeted about Uganda’s situation thus; “In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “the time is always right to do what’s right.” Now is the right time for the government of Uganda to stop harassing political opponents, ensure their fundamental rights, and recognize their essential contribution to Ugandan society.”

Through a statement, last Wednesday, the US Ambassador to Uganda said US pulled out of observing Uganda elections citing the decision by the Electoral Commission of Uganda to deny more than 75 per cent of the US election observer accreditations requested.

She said that despite multiple requests, the Electoral Commission provided no explanation for its decision, “which it communicated mere days before the elections”.

Brown noted that they had complied with all Electoral Commission accreditation requirements, as they had in previous elections in Uganda.

She further said that they are concerned about reports that the Electoral Commission had denied accreditation requests from members of other diplomatic missions and large numbers of Ugandan observers.
