Gov’t Rescues Kazinga Channel Users With Ferry As UNRA Closes Bridge For Rehabilitation Works

Uganda National Roads Authority has revealed that western Uganda’s Kazinga channel at Katunguru on the Hiima – Katunguru – Ishaka road is closed for emergency rehabilitation works.

According to UNRA, the closure that was implemented in May 2021 is expected to last between June 2, 2021 to September 2, 2021.

“During this period, a ferry will be provided to operate as an alternative means of transport,” says UNRA in its public announcement.

Meanwhile, TheSpy Uganda has learnt that the ferry is able to carry up to 06 vehicles (Saloon Cars, Pickups and Minivans/Taxis) and Passengers not exceeding 50 per crossing.

UNRA adds that this ferry is not permitted to carry heavy loads like Trailers and Buses which usually carry heavy cargo in their undercarriages. All these heavy-duty vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes as follows:

Kasese via Mbarara: Kampala – Mbarara – Ibanda – Kamwenge – Fort portal – Kasese.

Mbarara to Kasese: Mbarara – Ibanda – Kamwenge – Fort portal – Kasese.

Mpondwe to Mbarara or Kampala via Mbarara: Mpondwe – Kasese – Fort portal –

Kamwenge – Ibanda – Mbarara then Kampala.

Mpondwe to Ishaka or Kabale/Katuna via Ishaka: Mpondwe – Kasese – Fort portal –

Kamwenge – Ibanda – Mbarara then Ishaka and vice versa on return journey.

Kampala to Kasese via Fort portal: Not affected, usual travel route will be used.

“We will appreciate your patience and cooperation during the execution of the rehabilitation works,” UNRA noted.
