Kampala: The minister for Lands, Housing and Urban development Chris Baryomunsi has said that the government of Uganda is soon addressing the continuous growth of slums in Uganda especially in Kampala.
He noted that, the absence of implementations of physical planning is the main cause of slums in Uganda.
While addressing the press this afternoon, the Minister said that he has hope that this evening the parliament is going to pass an amendment to regulate slums and unplanned housing all over the country.
The minister noted that “There are some people who build houses in three days because they know they don’t have the qualifications; they begin on Friday when government officials have gone for a weekend and by Monday they’re entering the house, something that has increased the emergence of slum areas in Uganda.
He added that “Government has a good plan for slums whereby all people will be approached under groups and local councils.”
The minister added that “It is government’s plan to renovate Nakawa and Naguru slums. We had given the land in Nakawa and Naguru to investigators develop it, but as you know the issues of money, the investor failed and the government retained the land. So if there is any Ugandan who wants to develop this slum into a city, you are highly welcome.”
He also added that “Uganda is upgrading, so if you have a small piece of land, and you cannot manage to upgrade it, be ready to go away and someone else develops that piece of land.”
