Greenhill Academy Closed After Students Tested COVID-19 Positive

Kampala: Greenhill Academy Secondary School in Kampala has closed and sent all Senior 1 and S. 2 students back home after the school registered cases of Coronavirus at their premises.

Last week, the ministry of health noted that education Institutions have also become one of the dangerous hotspots for covid-19 after it confirmed that 803 COVID-19 cases in 29 schools around the country in the past week.

The affected schools included; 10 Nursing Schools, 11 Secondary schools, 7 Primary schools, 1 PTC, and 1 tertiary institution.

According to the Director-General Health Services at the ministry, Henry Mwebesa even some Universities like Kyambogo have also reported cases and are under investigation.

Mwebesa said that the main drivers of transmission in schools are overcrowding, non-adherence to SOPs, and inadequate supervision of the learners.

According to a letter dated May 31, 2021, addressed to the parents and guardians of the students, the school Headteacher Wilberforce Kamengo informed them that school has closed today and will reopen on June 14, 2021.

Kamengo further added that the two weeks recess will enable the school administration to disinfect the premises.

The Head of the School however did not disclose how many cases have been registered at the school noted that due to the new variant Covid 19 sweeping the entire country, it was necessary that they temporarily close the school.

Kamengo said that during the two weeks, the school will be closed for the two classes and they will conduct classes online until the students are back at school.

Kamengo also asked the students, parents and guardians to remain vigilant, observing Standard Operating Procedures in their homes as one way of curbing the disease.

The closure of Greenhill Academy comes at a time when there is an increase in cases of COVID 19 across the country that prompted the Ministry of Health to call for more strict measures aimed at curbing the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in Uganda.
