Kampala: Ever since the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) warned entities currently offering or planning to commence the provision of online data communication and broadcasting services to officially register with it by October 5, 2020, it has since received a couple of summons over cases filed by a number of Ugandans defining its move as a stopper to freedom of speech.
Among unhappy social media users who could not control the grievance towards UCC and opted to take the legal means, is Mr Bwowe Ivan who filed the case at High Court of Uganda, Kampala challenging the Ugandan broadcasting regulator.
Now in regard to his case, the court has issued a notice of motion to UCC saying that it will take motion on the day of 30th September 2020 at 11 o’clock in the forenoon or soon over its statetement titled “reminder to providers of online data communication and broadcasting services to obtain authorization” dated September 7, 2020, saying that it is illegal, ultra vires and an abuse of the law.
