Tech billionaire Elon Musk has issued a public statement expressing regret over recent attacks directed at former U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling an attempt to deescalate a heated and highly public feud between two of the most influential figures in American business and politics.

“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,” Musk wrote early Wednesday on X, the social media platform he owns. The post follows a week of escalating tensions between the two men, which included sharp personal insults, political threats, and deeply controversial claims.

Musk, who reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Trump’s recent White House campaign, had until recently been considered a prominent ally of the former president. However, their relationship appeared to collapse spectacularly after Musk made a series of scathing remarks about Trump—at one point accusing him of being linked to the notorious Jeffrey Epstein files, and claiming that was “the real reason” those files remained sealed.

The White House, while distancing itself from the spat, described Musk’s comments as part of an “unfortunate episode” that has now taken on national significance, especially given Musk’s outsized role in sectors heavily reliant on federal funding.

Trump, for his part, did not take the allegations lightly. In a fiery exchange, he suggested the “easiest way” to cut federal spending would be to cancel government contracts and subsidies awarded to Musk’s companies, including electric vehicle giant Tesla and aerospace firm SpaceX. Both firms are deeply integrated with U.S. government programs, including NASA missions and green energy initiatives.

In an interview with NBC News over the weekend, Trump dismissed any possibility of reconciliation.

“I have no intention of speaking to him,” he said bluntly. “He’ll pay very serious consequences,” Trump added, warning Musk against supporting primary challenges against Republicans loyal to his administration’s agenda.

Still, in a surprising softening of tone, Trump told reporters on Monday that despite their rift, he wished Musk well and acknowledged they had once shared a “great relationship.”

Musk’s expression of regret on Wednesday marks his most public attempt yet to ease tensions. In recent days, he has quietly dialed back his rhetoric, and reportedly instructed aides to refrain from escalating the conflict on social media and in the press.

Political analysts say the clash between Musk and Trump underscores the increasing entanglement between Silicon Valley titans and U.S. electoral politics, where business moguls are now wielding influence not just through campaign donations, but also via personal platforms and public rivalries.

As the 2026 political landscape begins to take shape, the fallout from the Musk-Trump rift is expected to reverberate across both parties, particularly in debates around tech regulation, federal subsidies, and campaign financing.

Neither the Trump campaign nor representatives for Musk have confirmed whether the two have communicated privately since the public fallout.
