In New Twist, Gov’t Opens Airport, Borders For Both Tourists & Travellers

Kampala: Following President Museveni’s address on COVID-19 pandemic over the weekend where he authorized airports to open only for tourists, the State Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Peter Ogwang, has come out and clarified that Entebbe airport and borders will reopen on October 1 for both tourists and other travellers.

Ogwanga has revealed that what is necessary for travellers is presenting certificates of negative test results for Covid-19, which must be done 72 hours before arriving in Uganda.

He adds, “For those entering through land borders, we already have our health teams across the borders. The issue at hand is that we need to learn how to live with the disease.”

In addition, Judith Nabakooba, the ICT and National Guidance Minister, has also clarified that the airport will be open to all travellers entering or leaving Uganda. “Travelling out, it is now mandatory to have negative test results for Covid-19 done within 72 hours before the flight. The same applies to all those travelling to Uganda from other countries.”

Following the alleged presidential approval after a meeting with the national COVID-19 task force to reopen the Entebbe airport, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) issued a tentative schedule of passenger flights that will fly into Uganda with effect from October 1, 2020, following its closure in March 2020.

Flight Schedules.
According to the schedule issued on September 08, 2020, by Eng Sooma Ayub, the Director of Airports and Aviation Security, the airport is ready to host flights from major airlines such as Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopia Airways, Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Uganda Airlines.

Some of the SoPs developed by CAA include installation of automated sanitizer at strategic points, marks at the airport to ensure social distancing, acquire temperature guns, three ultra-modern scans, which detect the temperature at a 30-metre distance and these will be put in the waiting lounge and rooms of Very Important Persons (VIPs).

Others are erection of executive tents at the airside and these will be used for screening and isolation to identify symptoms and testing for COVID19, passengers will be expected to arrive four hours earlier due to several checks.
