A court in Iran has sentenced President Hassan Rouhani’s younger brother Hossein Fereydoun to five years in prison, after he was found guilty of spying for the United States of America.

His trial of Fereydoun began earlier in February this year after he was arrested in 2017, but  subsequently released on bail.

Later after being found guilty, in May this year Fereydoun was  handed an unspecified jail sentence over corruption

Iran’s Judiciary Spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili had earlier said that court had sentenced a former Defence Ministry’s official to death in charge of spying for the United States.

However, according to Mirzan news agency, the death sentence was appealed in the Supreme Court.

However, according to Esmaili, three other individuals were sentenced to 10 years each in jail on the same charges. Two of them are accused of spying for the United States while one of them faces jail for spying for the United Kingdom.

Iran has been at loggerheads with the USA for years, with counter-accusations of  espionage from each country.
