By Peter Ssebulime

The Uganda journalists Association (UJA) has given Uganda PoliceForce four days to apologise for the violence meted out unto journalists and one week to respond to their petition that was recently presented to their leaders.

UJA President Bashir  Kazibwe Mbaziira revealed this during a press conference at UJA headquarters in Kawempe Divison, on behalf of the press fraternity.

Kazibwe said that “I’m disappointed by the police because ever since our petition over their brutality against journalists was handed to them we have not got a response up to now.

He added that “Now Police are given up to Thursday, November 14, 2019, to respond, if not we are to announce the next course of action. However, I want Editors not to betray us by giving the Police platform.”

On Monday, November 4,  2019, journalists presented a petition with 8 demand police must address which include; arresting, parading and prosecuting officers who abused the rights of journalists, constituting an audit committee to investigate all tortures against journalists, Compensate victims, issue directives to all police officers to stop confronting journalists while on their duties, educate police officers on the rights of press freedom and human rights among others.

Meanwhile, journalists who were brutalized on Monday have told the media that since that day their health conditions are worsening and their family members are getting intimidations from strange people suspected to be security operatives.

In the same vein, the Muslim community of Nakasero has joined the general public to condemn the police brutality against journalists.

Speaking to media this afternoon, the spokesperson of Tabliq faction Sheikh Bashir Mbaziira said police has diverted from its noble role of keeping law and order to torturing Ugandans, which is uncalled for.

He called upon the government to ensure the protection of all Ugandans and their property.
