Juba: HE.Brig.General Ronnie Balya, the Uganda’s ambassador to South Sudan, has officiated at the launch of Uganda-South Sudan business forum, a platform aiming at easing trade between Uganda and South Sudan business community.

Giving his remarks at the launch this morning in Juba, Gen.Balya said the platform will also discuss the available opportunities and design solutions to the current challenges hindering cross border trade between the two countries.

South Sudan is one of the largest importers of Ugandan goods. Uganda exported $357M to South Sudan in 2020, a figure that is more than double, when compared with exports to other neighboring countries.

Now, as a way of expanding the already available business and investment opportunities in both countries, Balya says the Uganda-S.Sudan Business Forum he launched today, targets to establish a Uganda – South Sudan joint business forum, raise awareness about investment and business opportunities in both countries, boost bilateral trade and investment flow, showcase the Uganda and South Sudan private sectors through the business exhibition and facilitate public-private sector dialogue to solve business hurdles between Uganda and South Sudan, among others opportunities.

Expected Outcomes

On what the two countries will benefit from this forum, Balya said there will be networking with potential partnerships, sharing challenges in the investments climate and in doing business.

For the public, sector, soft spoken Balya revealed  that they will benefit from the forum by understanding how to invest and do business, understanding needed reforms to promote and improve business environment, understanding value for public dialogue.

He added that they proposed to have Uganda-South.Sudan Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting immediately after the forum to listen to the concerns and recommendations for the Uganda-S.Sudan Business Forum but realized that it needed more time to organize since it involved wide consultations from different stakeholders in both countries.

“But we are not giving up on Joint Permanent Commission, soon we shall have it and the ministries, departments and agencies from both countries will use it to discuss issues of bilateral interest, threats, challenges, opportunities in the area of trade, security and immigration among others,” added Balya.
